Photojournalism Preview

Explain what kind of planning and research the photographer had to do to get the photos they took.

The photographer of this photograph had to research what routes immigrants take in the passage across the border from Serbia to Hungary. The photographer had to plan to be in these areas before the crack of dawn in order to find these immigrants still fast asleep with their children.

Explain what kind of planning and research the photographer had to do to get the photos they took.

The photographer of this photograph most likely had to research routes the migrants take in going to the train station to depart. The photographer had to plan ahead and make sure migrants took the route he chose to photograph at and make sure he was there with plenty of time to catch migrant en-route to the train station, hours or so before the planned departure of the train.

Explain what kind of planning and research the photographer had to do to get the photos they took.

The photographer of this photo had to research the times of the train arrival or departure for this photograph, and had to plan to be there on time in order to capture theses photos of immigrants waiting to load, or coming off the train.

Shooting Like A Photojournalist

Under the section on "Planning," what does the writer suggest doing to capture emotional images?

The writer suggests for the photographer to find out as much information as possible about the event they are attending. Knowing what type of emotions correlate with the event, will help you to look for these types of emotion and capture it in your photos.

Under the section on "Composition," what does the writer suggest doing to help you "pick a face out of the crowd?"

The writer suggests choosing a face you can frame with an interesting background, that will help tell the story of the event, when choosing a face out of the crowd, or choosing an individual who has a particular outfit that stands out and would create a good focal point for your photo.

Photo Essay Tips

What is a photo essay?

A photo essay is a collection of images that are placed in a specific order to show the progression of events, in a story like form.

Summarize the 5 tips the writer provides.

  • Choose a topic that you have an interest in
  • Do your research on the event- find out all you can about the subject you will be shooting
  • After researching the subject/event shoot from an angle that will best capture its uniqueness
  • Capture the emotion of the subject/event to truly tie the story together
  • Plan what shots you will take, walk through the venue in your head and see how each of your photos will tell a different part of the story
Planning Ahead

What event will you photograph?

I will photograph the community at a local farmers' market.

Provide the 5 Ws and H for your event:

Who: People who care about the freshness/ production of their food

What: Go to local farmers' markets to buy fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables

When: Saturday, April 30 from 9 am to 1 pm

Where: Toney Burger Activity Center, 3200 Jones Road Austin, TX

Why (why will the event happen?): The event will happen because people from local communities have a demand for fresh fruits and vegetables

How (how will the event happen?): Local communities set times and places to have farmers' markets, since locals have a demand for the farmers' fresh products, the farmers get together and supply their locally grown foods

Lightroom Adjustment Experiment

For the photo above, I used the white balance dropper, clicking on a neutral tone to adjust the colors. I further corrected the color issues in this photo using the temp and tint gauges.

For the photo above, I used the radial filter to create a inverted mask that allowed me to darken the exposure only in the areas where the photo had been over exposed, while keeping the rest of the photo properly exposed.

Pet Photography Preview

1. What type of pet will you photography?

For this pet photography photo shoot, I will photograph a dog.

2. Where will you shoot?

For this shoot I will photograph at a park, where I can capture pictures of the dog in action, playing around like dogs do.

3. What type of lighting will you use?

For this shoot, I will use natural light as not to scare the dog away with the flash.

4. What equipment will you need?

For the pet photography shoot, I will need a camera, kit lens, extension tube, doggy treats and some toys that illustrate the personality of the dog.

5. What challenges will you encounter?

During this shoot, I will encounter challenges like keeping the dog still and/ or cooperative.

6. How will you overcome these challenges?

To overcome these challenges, I will bring treats as an incentive for the dog to obey, and or play with the dog and use a high shutter speed to capture action photos instead.

7. Post an example for inspiration for your shoot. Explain what you like about the photo and how you will attempt to emulate or use for inspiration.

I really like the blurred background and perspective of this photo, it draws the attention right to the dog and makes the dog the center of interest in this photo. I will attempt to emulate this photo, by using a wide aperture that allows me to create a blurred background but still capture the scenic view of the dogs' natural environment without distracting from the dog itself.

Family Portraits Preview

1. Whose family will you photograph?

For this shoot, I will photograph my sister's family and possibly my own too.

2. Where will you shoot?

For this shoot, I will take the family photos at Zilker, either the Botanical Garden or park portion.

3. What type of lighting will you use?

I will use all natural lighting for this family photo shoot.

4. What equipment will you need?

For this shoot, I will need a tripod, ND filter, wide angle lens, kit lens, camera and toys to keep the kids busy, and maybe sitting props to accommodate the height of my family members for the photos.

5. What challenges will you encounter?

During this shoot, I will encounter challenges such as catching the light in the subjects eyes, or flattering all the subjects.

6. How will you deal with these challenges?

I will deal with these challenges by positioning them in such a way as to draw the light into their eyes, and pay attention to their "perceived flaws" so I can shoot the photographs in a way as to hide them.

7. Post an example for inspiration for your shoot. Explain what you like about the photo and how you will attempt to emulate or use for inspiration.

I really like this this photo because it creates contrast between the background and the subjects, to help draw attention to the subjects themselves, and I really like that the subjects seem very natural and casual.

In an attempt to emulate this photo, I will be aware of how I can use the attire of the subjects clothing to create contrast with a particular landscape, also I will help my subjects to pose in natural and comfortable positions they normally are in, and lastly remember to stagger heads to create interest.

HDR Photo Project

Overexposed

Normal Exposure

Underexposed

HDR Photo

To create this image I put the camera in bracketing mode to take three photos, an underexposed, a normally exposed, and a overexposed photo. Then using the automatic method in photoshop I combined the photos to create my HDR photo.

I think that I was pretty successful in creating this HDR photo, however the wind may have moved the tripod a little to create the blur in the clouds, instead of the sharp look it should've been.
